7 must see beaches in Amorgos

Amorgos island has some seriously epic beaches, each one delighted with the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea and plenty of sunshine during spring and summer and even some of later parts of the year. Welcoming tourists from all over the world every year, summers in Amorgos are simply the best. The atmosphere is vibrant and fun, the weather is sweet and the tavernas and bars stay open until the early hours of the morning. With so many different beaches to choose from, these 7 we definitely advise you to consider visiting on your next vacation to the island.

Mourous beach

Popular Mourous beach is frequently visited by most tourists coming to Amorgos during their vacation. This beach has a special reputation for its turquoise water and rock formations all around. Although it’s a fairly small beach, it does have some amazing small caves which you can swim into. Mouros is also a great place for snorkelling and those who love adventure, will definitely love it here. It is one of the most popular beaches in Amorgos during the summer period so don’t expect much privacy or space, but it is fun with an exciting atmosphere. There is also a taverna located just above the beach, serving plenty of different Greek dishes and with a splendid view.

Agia Anna

Famous for being one of the locations in the Luc Beson film “The Big Blue”, this stunning beach is also one of the most popular on the island. It is located just down from the famous Monastery of Hozotiovissa and close to Chora, the town centre of the island. Another great destination for snorkleing, the Agia Anna beach is a little corner of pebbled rocky beach space with crystal clear waters.

Levrossos

As one of the beaches closest to the Aegialis Hotel & Spa, we simply love Levrossos. Located in Aegiali Bay, Levrossos beach is a little bit quieter than the rest, but don’t confuse this for it being less nice. This hidden gem, about 10 minutes’ walk down on a hiking path from the hotel is ideal for those who are looking for some privacy whilst enjoying the sunshine and the refreshing waters of the Aegean Sea. On the one side of the beach, and behind some rocks, the beach becomes even more private and this is a corner frequently visited by the free-spirited ones who are keen to do some nude sunbathing and swimming. There is one taverna on the beach where you can enjoy food, drinks and other delicious Greek cuisine treats.

Nikouria island

Another tucked away natural gem of Amorgos, Nikouria is a tiny island comprising of a few small and very secluded beaches. Access to Nikoura beaches can only be done by boat either from one of the main ports or the Agios Pavlos one. A great place for relaxation away from the busy parts of the island, Nikouria always offers plenty of adventure and fun to those who visit. Snorkelling is very popular in this part of the island and you can also do some hiking adventures on the walking trails (don’t expect anything too adventurous though). Boat tours are also an option, and you can enquire with our team at Aegilais about the tender-boat adventure in Nikouria island.

Liveros Bay

This is definitely not a beach to go and spend a whole day on. But it’s a must see whilst in Amorgos. It is here that the famous shipwreck can be found and has been for the last 3 decades or so. This “Olympia” ship was built in the 50’s and one day, as stormy, tough weather conditions suddenly came and the currents were overwhelming, the ship found comfort in the nearest shore. Stuck due to accidentally hitting the rocks, the ship never left the Liveros Bay. It was also featured in the Big Blue film and it’s just an impressive sight to see. Access to the bay can be done by driving your car, AV or scooter. Once you arrive at the destination, you will need to park your vehicle on the side of the main road and walk to the beach which is about a 15-minute stroll. It will be worth it.

Aegiali Bay Beach

We’re not just saying this because it’s our local beach, but Aegiali Bay is truly a lovely spot for everyone to enjoy. It’s quite long and spacious, with a soft sandy shore and plenty of good vibes. There are about 5 or 6 tavernas on the beach front and a few beach clubs, including Nissi, where the atmosphere is always vibrant during the peak season and where you can get sunbeams and beach umbrellas. Aegiali Bay beach is located right in the centre of Aegiali, so you will also be close to the main port and all the lovely shops and cafes,

Katapola Bay Beach

On the other side of the island, visitors of Aegiali can also take day trips to Katapola, which is the other main part of the island. The beach is not as big, but it’s lovely and situated next to the main road in Katapola, meaning you will be close to all the shops, tavernas and cafes. This beach is lovely to sit back and relax on, taking in the sun rays and enjoying peaceful moments in the Amorgos shores.

With so many wonderful beaches to choose from, it might be a good idea to try and see them all. Enjoy exploring the sandy shores of Amorgos island!
